‘Twin Peaks’ thoughts, Season 3, Episode 17: ‘Part 17’

As a television show, Twin Peaks is a hybrid: primetime soap opera, murder mystery, horror, parody, comedy, proto–prestige drama, and avant garde/experimental work coexist in the same space. (For god’s sake, this season has musical guests!) The border is always porous.

That’s true within the story as well. Our world and the next one are laid atop one another, red curtains over forest pines, zigzag floors over human flesh. Identity shatters and doubles: People are two people in one, or the same person in two separate bodies. The dead rise. The living go to hell. Now the spacetime continuum itself has been ruptured.

The effect on reality is not dissimilar from the effect of the first atomic blast. There was a world before it, and now there is a world after it.

I reviewed the penultimate episode of Twin Peaks for Pop Heist. (Gift link!)
