It’s interesting to compare MobLand to The Gentlemen, Guy Ritchie’s other stylish British gangster thriller. Where the latter derives its power from bold imagery and biting class commentary, this show relies more on the strength of older, more idiosyncratic actors — not even Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren and Toby Jones, but Hardy and Pulver and Froggatt and Paddy Considine and so on. These characters aren’t brash up-and-comers; they’re middle-aged men and women who’ve lived lives, hard ones, and they look it. (In the sexiest way possible, for the most part.) They’re caught somewhere between a younger generation that doesn’t believe in a future and an older one that won’t live to see it but wants to take it all with them anyway.
