The Game of Thrones Season Four Cheat Sheet
April 2, 2014Bone up on Thrones: Over at Rolling Stone I wrote a cheat sheet for the show so you can get the lay of the land before this Sunday’s premiere. Share it with that special “wait, who’s that guy again?” someone in your life.
Apologies if you’re getting sick of all the GoT/ASoIaF stuff, but a) you haven’t even seen the half of it here, and b) just you wait a couple weeks when Mad Men season begins.
The Top 40 Game of Thrones Characters, Ranked
April 1, 2014Valar Dohaeris or what have you — I ranked 40 major characters from Game of Thrones from worst to best for Rolling Stone. I never do this kind of thing, which is why I had to do it. I think I’m gonna do one of those supermarket “you’re our millionth customer” prizewinner things in the comments, only for people who say “obviously you’ve never read the books.”
“True Detective” thoughts, Season One, Episode Eight: “Form and Void”
March 18, 2014Just realized I never linked to my review of the True Detective season finale. Fittingly it was a mix of “gripping” and “a mess,” like the whole season.
Six Oscar Upsets to Watch Out For
March 2, 2014I did a thing on potential Oscar upsets for Rolling Stone. Some are bona fide upsets, some would just be upsetting.
12 Times Oscar Got It Right
February 26, 2014I wrote an article about this very thing for Rolling Stone. I got to compare Brandon in The Godfather to James Brown inventing funk and God parting form from void, so that was fun.
“True Detective” thoughts, Season One, Episode Six: “Haunted Houses”
February 23, 2014“True Detective” thoughts, Season One, Episode Five: “The Secret Fate of All Life”
February 23, 2014I reviewed last weekend’s True Detective for Rolling Stone. I thought it was the best episode yet, comfortably so.
Q&A: Darren Aronofsky on “Noah”
February 12, 2014I interviewed director Darren Aronofsky about his upcoming Biblical epic Noah, which is set in a timeless non-Biblical fantasy world, interestingly. Key concepts: “this isn’t your grandmother’s Bible,” giant monsters, theodicy, Patti Smith writing a lullaby for Russell Crowe to sing to Emma Watson and recording it with the Kronos Quartet and Clint Mansell.
“True Detective” thoughts, Season One, Episode Four: “Who Goes There”
February 12, 2014I reviewed this week’s episode of True Detective particularly that bravura closing sequence, for Rolling Stone. I still think this thing’s mad corny, but it’s certainly well made.
“True Detective” thoughts, Season One, Episode One: “The Long Bright Dark”
January 12, 2014I reviewed the series premiere of HBO’s new anthology-format crime drama True Detective for Rolling Stone. It’s the Spin̈al Tap album cover of hourlong quality dramas — NONE MORE BLACK — but Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are awfully watchable in it. I’m not sure that’s enough at this point, but we’ll see.
“Downton Abbey” thoughts, Season Four, Episode Two
January 12, 2014I reviewed tonight’s Downton Abbey for Rolling Stone. That was a disturbing episode. Can a show like this take the weight? That’s what I try to figure out.
“Downton Abbey” Thoughts, Season Four, Episode One
January 7, 2014Back in black: I reviewed the Season Four premiere of Downton Abbey for Rolling Stone. I enjoy writing about this show a great deal.
Five Big Questions for Downton Abbey Season Four
January 5, 2014Over at Rolling Stone I ask exactly that. Excited to be covering the show for RS again this season.
“Homeland” thoughts, Season Three, Episode Twelve: “The Star”
December 16, 2013I reviewed Homeland‘s season finale for Rolling Stone. An exercise in undercutting what little value the show still had.
“Homeland” thoughts, Season Three, Episode Eleven: “Big Man in Tehran”
December 9, 2013I reviewed last night’s episode of Homeland for Rolling Stone. Juuuuust about had it with this thing.
“Homeland” thoughts, Season Three, Episode Ten: “Good Night”
December 2, 2013I reviewed last night’s Homeland for Rolling Stone. The dictionary definition of “mixed bag.”
“Homeland” thoughts, Season Three, Episode Nine: “One Last Time”
November 25, 2013“Homeland” thoughts, Season Three, Episode Eight: “a red wheelbarrow”
November 18, 2013I reviewed yesterday’s pretty darn entertaining Homeland episode for Rolling Stone. I really didn’t expect to cheer for this show, let alone over what I cheered for, but hey, neat.
