A Different Verse of A Song of Ice and Fire

A Patreon snafu kept us from posting our latest BLAM, but we’re back with a new subscriber-exclusive mini-podcast, based on questions from readers like you! (No, not you, the other one — yeah, you.) This episode, $5/month subscriber Andrew Dill asks Your Illustrious Cohosts which parts of the world of Ice and Fire that aren’t covered thoroughly by the main narrative we’d like to see explored more in-depth. It’s an interesting question, and our answers range all over the world. Click here to subscribe and find out!

(There’s no way to legally download this episode’s theme music, but it’s “Horror Head” by Curve if you were wondering.)

Moment 21 | Westerosworld

From HBO’s dreams to BLAM’s reality! It’s a crossover between the concepts of two of TV’s biggest shows on this edition of our Patreon-exclusive mini-podcast, courtesy of subscriber Chris Schera, who asks what storylines we’d want to take part in if a Westeros-themed Westworld-style android theme park existed. This was a fun one — click here to subscribe and listen for just $2 a month!

Moment 20 | Tywin’s Heirs

Tywin Lannister only has two sons, one of whom is sworn to the Kingsguard and the other of whom he hates. Why has he never attempted to father more heirs? That’s the question facing Sean & Stefan in the latest BLAM mini-podcast, available exclusively for our $2-and-up Patreon subscribers. The answers involve both in-story considerations and the meta-quirks of writing. Sean is also forced to say the words “the old Tywin two-pump,” so there’s that to look forward to. Click here, subscribe, and enjoy!

Moment 19 | Arya’s Needle, Arya’s Fate

What lies in store for the wolf child? We’re taking our best guesses in this episode of our Patreon-exclusive mini-podcast, in which we answer subscriber TheWorkingDead’s questions about the fate of Arya Stark. Did Jon’s joke about finding her after the snow thaws, frozen to death with a needle in her hand, augur something more serious? What about Ned’s maxim that the lone wolf dies but the pack survives? Will she reconnect with Nymeria or her siblings again, and what will happen if so? Pledge $2/month to our Patreon to listen in and see what you think!

Sometimes the simple questions are the most fun to answer. Our latest BLAM Patreon-only mini-podcast comes to you courtesy of subscriber Grant Boland, who just asked us who our favorite and least favorite characters in A Song of Ice and Fire are. The answers may surprise you! Or they may not. I’m no mindreader, man. Anyway, this was a delight to answer. Click here to subscribe for as low as $2 a month to hear the results!

Our second BLAM of the month is all about the real ruler of the Red Keep: that big old mean black cat who keeps popping in and out of the narrative, of course! Reader Ellan Evans asks us if there’s some deeper meaning behind the feline formerly known as Princess Rhaenys’s cat Balerion. Has our four-legged friend been skinchanged by parties unknown? Could he be possessed by the spirit of a slain Targaryen? Or is he just a cool cat? Find out in the latest episode of our subscriber-only mini-podcast, available for just $2/month at our Patreon!

Moment 16 | Sean vs. Mad Max: Fury Road & The Fifth Element

It’s another surprise Sean solo edition of BLAM! This time, Sean’s tackling two movies he dislikes, at the request of listener Jonathan Mauro: George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road and Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element. What’s your illustrious co-host’s beef against these two much-beloved blockbuster sci-fi/action hits? Subscribe for just $2/month and find out!

Moment 15 | Tinfoil

It’s our final BLAM of 2017, and man is it a juicy one! This episode of our subscriber-exclusive mini-podcast concerns a question pitched to us by subscriber Björn Mark Helgoe, who’d like to know which tinfoil-hat theories we believe in that the majority of the fandom doesn’t, and why. Strap on your thinking cap, subscribe to our Patreon for just $2/month or more, and listen in to Sean’s “Oberyn poisoned Tywin” theory and beyond. Thanks to you all for subscribing and listening! Happy New Year!

Moment 14 | Believing in the Big Prophecies

That’s right, folks — Sean & Stefan are going back to back with two new BLAMs in a single night! The topic for our latest subscriber-only mini-podcast comes from $5/month patron Steve Shapiro, who asks why everyone’s so certain that the major story-ending prophecies involving Azor Ahai Reborn and “the dragon has three heads” will come to pass given Marwyn the Mage’s memorably profane line, “Prophecy will bite your prick off every time.” We love prophecy questions here at BLAM because they exist right in the venn-diagram overlap between theories and theme, so we really dig into this one. Keep your night of hot Boiled Leather content going strong by subscribing for just $2 a month at our Patreon and listening in!

Moment 13 | Re-Adapting A Song of Ice and Fire

When George R.R. Martin finally sends A Dream of Spring off to the printer, will a Game of Thrones redux be on the way? That’s the question posed by $10/month subscriber Tom Berman in the latest episode of the BLAM mini-podcast, exclusive to our $2-and-up patrons! Sean & Stefan discuss the likelihood of a second film or television adaptation of ASoIaF, wonder who might be suited to do one should it happen, and compare it to recent developments in the re-adaptation front, like Watchmen and The Lord of the Rings (kinda). Subscribe for the low low price of $2 a month and enjoy!

Moment 12 | Velvet Goldmine

BLAM goes glam! Sean’s going solo for this very special episode of the Boiled Leather Audio Moment, courtesy of a question from Jon A. Scholten, a subscriber at the $10 level. Jon asks about Sean’s frequently documented fascination with Velvet Goldmine, director Todd Haynes’s 1998 work of David Bowie/Iggy Pop fanfic in film form. What is it about this movie that Sean finds so inspiring? Subscribe for just $2 a month to listen in and find out!

Moment 11 | Chekhov’s Wildfire

Welcome to an explosive edition of our subscriber-only mini-podcast! This time around BLAM is truly living up to its onomatopoeic acronym with a question from Matthew, a subscriber at the $5 level, who writes: “What do you think of the Chekhov’s Wildfire theory; that King’s Landing will be destroyed by Dany, Cersei, or someone else?” It’s a cool question, because it lets Stefan & Sean answer in ways that are fundamentally the same but with very different details. Pledge $2 a month, tune in, and find out what they are! And don’t forget: If you want us to answer your question on-air, pledge $5 a month to go in the queue, or $10 a month to go to the front of the line!

The Boiled Leather Audio Music

October 23, 2017
Boiled Leather Audio Hour Patreon subscriber scholt25 writes:
Sean, as a patreon subscriber to the Boiled Leather Audio Moment I was wondering if you could post a track listing to the songs you use in your intro/outro for the BLAM eps, some of them I recognize/know but others not so much and would like to know. You have a good taste in music, unless it’s Stefan picking tracks in which case he has good taste! Thanks Sean (or Stefan)
Sean here—Yes, it’s me! There’s almost always a link to purchase the song in the description of the episode in the patreon post, so that’s one way to figure it out. But sometimes I forget, and sometimes there are rights issues that prevent me from finding a decent link. So sure, why not? Here’s what we’ve used so far:
I was a radio DJ back in college and love making mixes so this has been a fun way to sneak that side of me into the podcast. I usually just pick something I’ve been listening to a lot the day I edit the episode, as long as it has a decent intro/outro that works for the format. Thanks for listening!

Moment 10 | New POVs

Which characters’ heads are we hoping hardest to get inside of for the first time in The Winds of Winter? That’s the simple question posed by listener/subscriber Pascal, and the answers lead to a short but sweet episode of BLAM, our Patreon-exclusive mini-podcast. Note that we’ve exhausted all of our $10-level questions, so if you wanna move to the front of the line for our next episode, up your ante to ten bucks a month and ask away! And if you’re not a subscriber yet, pledge $2 a month and listen in!

Moment 09 | Escaping the Cycle of Violence

This month’s BLAM question comes to us from $10/month patreon subscriber Tim Westmyer, and it’s a great one. Using Brienne, Jaime, Tyrion, Sansa, and Arya as test cases and the Hound as (for now) a successful example, Tim asks which characters will escape the story’s cycle of violence and vengeance and find some peace after all is said and done. We go broad, we go specific, and we do it all in eight minutes and change — an ideal Boiled Leather Audio Moment. Click here and pledge at the $2/month level to listen! And remember, if you have a question for Sean & Stefan to answer in a future BLAM, subscribe at $5/month, or bump it up to $10 for the priority treatment!

Moment 08 | Our POV Preferences

This month’s subscriber-only mini-podcast question, or questions plural, courtesy of the folks at DalyPlanetFilms: Who are our favorite POV characters, and which minor POV characters would we like to see more from in the final two volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire? As you might expect when the topic is “tell us stuff you like,” this was a fun BLAM to record. Thanks to the DPF guys, and thanks to everyone who subscribes to our Patreon at the $2 level to hear these Boiled Leather Audio Moments, at the $5 level to ask a question we’ll answer in an episode, and at the $10 level to ensure your question goes to the front of the queue!

Moment 07: Bran and the Time Travel Effect

On this month’s subscriber-only Boiled Leather Audio Moment, we’re going back…to the future! Okay, not really—that’s sort of the point of the discussion. In our first-ever BLAM available at our new $2 reward level, Sean & Stefan answer a question from listener Max B. about whether recent events on the Game of Thrones adaptation indicate that Bran Stark, everyone’s favorite paraplegic telepath, will have an increasingly dramatic effect on past events in the world of the story. Paradoxes abound, and to borrow Ser Barristan’s unfortunate phrasing we slice through them like a knife through cheese. Hit that $2 subscription button, then press play!

BLAM for a $2 Bill: New Patreon Reward Tiers!

June 16, 2017

Hello folks! First off, thank you all for your continued support of the Boiled Leather Audio podcasts, both Hour and Moment, via our Patreon. We wanted to give you a heads up that as of June’s subscriber-only Boiled Leather Audio Moment, we’re raising the reward tier for BLAM access from $1 to $2. We couldn’t keep that low low introductory price that low forever, or it would have ceased to be introductory, thus creating a tear in the spacetime continuum and threatening all of existence with annihilation. That said, we hope you’ll consider upping your pledge so you can continue to listen to each new BLAM–we’ve had a lot of fun with them and think they’re worth it.

Meanwhile, we’re shifting the $1 reward tier so that it remains the doorway to the subscriber-exclusive posts Stefan’s been doing on the Patreon site. Be sure and check them out if you haven’t already! Everyone subscribing at $2 or more will still have access to the Illustrious Co-host’s wit and wisdom, of course.

Thanks again for your support. It means so much to us!

Moment 06: Renly Baratheon: Threat or Menace?

On this all-new installment of our subscriber-only mini-podcast, we’re examining the character of one Renly Baratheon, courtesy of listener John Spinella. Was his move to cut ahead of his older brother Stannis in the line to the Iron Throne the ethical and political disaster many observers have said, or has dying before we could learn how he would really rule earned him a bad rap? Subscribe, listen, and find out!
