The Dark Knight Reads: 15 Essential Batman Graphic Novels

I wrote up a list of 15 essential Batman graphic novels—essential, not necessarily best; you’ll see—for Rolling Stone. Number one is definitely number one, though.

    • Believe me, that wasn’t my call.

      • Oh. Wow. I guess that explains the “essential, not necessarily best” comment. (Feels like I’ve just found out how sausages are made or peeked behind the Wizard’s curtain…)

Any chance of seeing an unedited list? Maybe also some love for All Star Batman and Robin (or is that asking too much?)

        • Aw, it’s not as shocking as all that, is it? It’s a national publication at which I receive editorial guidance and feedback–it’s hardly a man-behind-the-curtain situation! 🙂 At any rate, with the parameters we hashed out I was pretty happy with how the list turned out, so there’s really no such thing as a director’s cut of it. And even if there was, ASB&R wouldn’t be on it, and I say that as someone who enjoyed that book a lot. Fun, yes. Essential? What are you, dense? Are you retarded or something? 🙂

    No love for Batman: Gothic?

Or the Alan Grant/Norm Breyfogle run? Or the Pete Milligan/Jim Aparo run? [Actually, I don’t think those have been collected.] And what about Knightquest, featuring the Batman whose costume looked horrible drawn by any artist other than Mike Manley? I’m really just trying to connect with my generation on the internet.

SEAN WHERE IS THE PAPA SPANK CHRONICLES WTF.

I like nothing—well, few things–better than that Frank Miller drawing of Batman riding a goddam horse.

    • Yeah. I went to go search for an image to run with this post and my fingers were typing “batman horseback” before my brain even knew what they were doing.

I might be in the minority, but I would include :

    Batman : Blind Justice
    Going Sane
    Broken City

Its only a single issue story, but I still think “To Kill A Legend” is in the top few Batman stories ever written.
