“True Detective” thoughts, Season One, Episode One: “The Long Bright Dark”

I reviewed the series premiere of HBO’s new anthology-format crime drama True Detective for Rolling Stone. It’s the Spin̈al Tap album cover of hourlong quality dramas — NONE MORE BLACK — but Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are awfully watchable in it. I’m not sure that’s enough at this point, but we’ll see.

Hi, read your review of the first episode of “True Detective” as I enjoyed the new show quite a bit. You referenced Rust’s statement that he could smell a “psycho’s fear” but I thought he said “psychosphere”, which fits more with the morbid knowledge base of Rust and his penchant for saying “odd shit” per Martin.
Also in another reviewer’s blog, I saw this: “Infused with a heavy air of sadness, and a tinge of something truly awful waiting on the horizon (“I can smell the psychosphere,” Rust gravely intones).
Just thought I would write you to share this. Who knows, not me.
    Thanks for your review(s).

    • Thanks for the kind words, Bill! But as Rev says below, yeah, I think the idea was that Marty misheard what Rust was saying because he wasn’t familiar with the concept.

I think that’s the joke, Bill: Hart hears “I can smell the psycho’s fear” instead of what Rust’s actually saying.

@STC: reading the comments thread on your review reminds me why, excepting the three-four blogs I regularly peruse, I don’t read comment threads.

That said, ‘bitch-made’ sounds worth appropriating & detourning. “STC: fine bitch-made comix since…”
