“I don’t owe the fans a goddamn thing.”

My interview with Frank Miller about The Spirit is up on Maxim’s Movie Blog.

I can’t wait to see this douchebag crash and burn on Christmas. In ticket sales, I mean–I’m not going to see the movie. I don’t owe Miller a goddamn thing.

  2. I’ll buy an extra one for you! 😉

I don’t have much attachment to the Spirit material I’ve read, so seeing the virulence of the reaction against the movie version, presumably based on some sepia-toned vision of a polite adaptation, gets my Irish up for some reason. I certainly like Frank Miller stuff a lot more than I liked Eisner’s Spirit, I guess, so I’m in Frank’s corner. That douchebag’s my favorite comics creator, after all!

What strikes me most is Miller’s utter hypocrisy. He’d be hollering bloody murder if Rodrigues had treated SIN CITY the way he’s treating THE SPIRIT.But I guess this is really his inferiority complex showing; after all, he knows he’s not just going to be compared to Eisner, but also Darwyn Cooke (who showed how to update the character successfully) and Brad Bird (whose UNMADE animated version is legendary among insiders). And, if we’re really going to be truthful here: when WAS the last time Miller really did something top-notch?
